Here's a question for all the knowledgeable scribes out there. What is the best bet re the 2009/10 football season?
As regular readers of the Chuckle will know I am a novice when it comes to football punting (only had a handful of bets last season) and was totally amazed when I looked on Oddschecker earlier in the week and saw that there were about 50 markets up and running re the Premiership and about 25 for each and every other League in England and Scotland!
I did think about saying Hull City at 4/1 to finish bottom of the Prem, or Ipswich Town at 10/1 to win the Championship however in the end the best bet in the opinion of my good self is Torquay United to be promoted from League 2 at 7/1.
Southampton 20/1 to win Champtionship1 or 8/1 to get promoted. Saints have had their problems but that division is awful from 5th posision onwards. If Bournemouth can survive with a higher deficit then Saints can get promotion, They've got a great lower league manager in Pardew as well now.
I'd be inclined to have a few quid on Arsene Wenger being the first to go...

I say, old boy, almost caused me to choke on my cup of tea there!!!
I think you can get 50/1 on this but personally I wouldn't take 50 million to one.
Do you not think he's living off the undefeated season a bit too much now Barney? you havent won ANYthin for 5 seasons... Had he been a liverpool man utd or chelsea boss he would have been out by now...
May not be original or even the biggest price but Torres to be top goal scorer.
Must be buying money as there is know one else in the league that will get near him if he stays fit.
A good E/W Alternative is Syilvan Ebanks Blake of Wolves who has scored goals in the championship by the bag load for both Plymouth and Wolves. _________________ Roll of honour

Paddy Power have a the Torres bet advertised on the LFC website, 11-4 which is doubled if he scores 30 or more goals... 4-1 is the best price elsewhere.

Arsenal haven't won anything for 4 seasons, old boy - since the 2005 FA Cup Final when we beat Man Utd. Don't forget Liverpool haven't won anything for 3 seasons either. Am fairly confident though that the run won't stretch to 5 seasons...
I do think that the reputation of managers these days is so media generated it defies belief. Reality seems to count for very little when it comes to the 'bigging' up one man but 'knocking down' another. Top examples at the moment are Martin O'Neill (what has he actually achieved at Villa in 3 seasons??) and Nigel Clough (Derby ended the season in woeful form yet is talked up as a messiah).
I think Torres to be the top goalscorer if he stays fit is great value.
On managers, Nigel Clough has a hell of a lot to live up to and I sincerely hope he manages to do well as i have always liked him and the pressure must be quite high. Having had a long time at Burton (surprised it was so long though) to gain experience may stand him in good stead.
Martin O'Neill, as referred to earlier, is going through an odd time by his standards. As a leicester lad ( albeit a hammer) you could not help but get caught up in the O'Neill infectious euphoria the majority of his time at the foxes brought. He lifted an underperforming championship team into a double league cup winning team and regular in the top ten of the premier.
His time at Celtic too brought almost universal support from all the neutrals as he guided them to the UEFA final. Celtic under him were entertaining to watch albeit in a 2 team "capable of winning title" league.
His time at Villa has been bizarre though and has cost me in the pocket. Twice I have backed Villa to win the handicap points league and twice from fantactic winning positions they have tailed off dramatically. His team selection for the UEFA cup game last year when the cup was surely theirs for the taking to concentrate on the 4th spot in the league......worked well didn't it?...was so unlike him. A UEFA cup win for the Villa would have been a massive achievement and fans were right to feel as they did when his team selection totally ruined any chance they had of victory. The Martin O'neill of Foxes days would have gone for it. I have to be honest and say that i wanted him to be England manager at the time he went for it for the battling qualities he would have instilled at that time.
