VICTORY Moon, winner of the 2003 UAE Derby and an early international star for Mike de Kock, was put down on Sunday after fracturing a hind leg in his stall. The ten-year-old son of Al Mufti stood the past four seasons at Maine Chance Farms in South Africa.

Stud manager John Slade told racingweb.co.za: "We found him at 4pm. We're not sure exactly what happened, but the injury to his leg was a long fracture consistent with horses getting up from the floor of their barns."

Veterinarians were initially hopeful of saving Victory Moon by inserting screws and plates into his leg, but a thorough examination under anaesthesia revealed further unreparable damage.

From a single crop of racing age, Victory Moon has been represented by five winners including the Group 3 scorer Nocturnal Affair.

"This happened at a time when Victory Moon was starting to shape as a stallion," said Slade.

"He had a very good rate of winners to runners, even better than top stallion Var, and this while we only expected his runners to come into their own when they were older."

As well as the UAE Derby, Victory Moon captured the Group 2 UAE 2,000 Guineas and Group 2 Maktoum Challenge. He also ran third to Pleasantly Perfect in the Dubai World Cup and fifth in the 2003 Eclipse Stakes during a brief campaign in Britain.

In total, he won 7 of 13 starts and nearly $2.5m in earnings.

Out of the winning Dancing Champ mare Dancing Flower, Victory Moon was a half-brother to eight winners including South African champion older stayer Kelly.
