Classy sprinter Utmost Respect has died after contracting peritonitis following surgery.
This season's Group Two Duke of York Stakes winner had been in intensive care suffering from an inflammation of the membrane which covers the intestines within the abdomen.
The five-year-old, trained by Richard Fahey, originally underwent surgery to remove gravel in his foot.
Although the operation was a success, the horse took a turn for the worse with a secondary infection, which was diagnosed as peritonitis. He died on Sunday night.
"He was a very good horse to me and everybody at the yard," said Fahey.
The son of Danetime won eight of 16 races, including his last three starts, and amassed prize money totalling £241,345.
