CHELTENHAM has asked the BHA to consider a relaxation of the entry qualifications for the JCB Triumph Hurdle in a bid to open up the contest to horses successful in France outside the British juvenile season.
Should Cheltenham's wish be granted, hurdlers who win in France as three-year-olds prior to the start of the new British campaign in late April will become eligible for the Triumph.
Although any changes would not be implemented until at least 2011 and, more likely, 2012, Cheltenham managing director Edward Gillespie feels amending qualification for the Triumph would be beneficial to the race.
Gillespie said: "The question of why is the Triumph Hurdle restricted to novices was put to us. We thought it was a very sensible question, and when we asked the authorities, they said it wasn't the most stupid question they'd ever been asked either."
I think the addition of quality French 4yo's would benefit the race and it would also help establish the comparative merits of French & British form. Some of those shrewd French purchases by Anthony Bromley, etc. would then be less of an enigma to us prior to running in the UK.
