SULK, a gutsy winner of the 2001 Prix Marcel Boussac who also acquitted herself admirably in Group 1 company at three, died on Saturday during an operation for colic.

The 10-year-old daughter of Selkirk was bred by London Thoroughbred Services and raced in the colours of the operation's director James Wigan.

She was a granddaughter of the Aga Khan's Poule d'Essai des Poulicheswinner Masarika, and her pedigree received a further boost when her Rock Of Gibraltar half-brother Eagle Mountain finished runner-up to Authorized in the 2007 Derby and won last year's Hong Kong Cup.

Trained by John Gosden, she won two races as a juvenile including a hard-fought victory over Danseuse D'Etoile in the Marcel Boussac, and though she didn't win again at three, she finished placed in the Nassau Stakes, the Yorkshire Oaks and the Prix Royal-Oak.

Sulk's progeny have proved a big hit in the sale ring, none more so than Ibn Battuta, her son by Seeking The Gold who became a winner in the UAE, who was sold to John Ferguson for $900,000 at the 2006 Keeneland September yearling sale.

She wasin foal to Dansili and had an Oasis Dream filly foal at foot.

James Wigan said: "It is very sad news. Sulk was an exceptionally honest and sound racemare, a lovely character and a very good-looking individual. She had never had any health problems before."
