NEW SEEKER, who won nearly £400,000 during his 35-race career, has been put down after suffering a pelvic injury on Wednesday.
The son of Green Desert raced in the colours of the Elite Racing Club and won eight of his 35 starts including the Royal Hunt Cup 2005 and the 2003 Britannia Stakes. He also won the International Handicap in 2003 and 2005.
Trained for the majority of his career by Clive Cox, New Seeker won twice at Listed level after switching to Paul Cole and was retired to racing charity Greatwood in September.
Elite Racing Club's racing manager Matthew Budden said: “New Seekerwas a true star for the club. Although he had been retired for over a year, he was still very much in the thoughts of our members, many of whom saw him parade at Greatwood’s Open Day in June.
"He was partly responsible for some of the most exciting years in the club’s history as him and Soviet Song captured the headlines after their many high-profile successes.”
Have only just picked up the news - am gutted. He was a big star, a character and one of the biggest flat horses I have ever seen!
His life since retirement has been difficult - at one point a vet recommended he be pts having suffered a cracked knee and ligament damage whilst in training. He then did the splits prior to arriving at Greatwood and the op on his hock was not a success. It had been decided that he would spend the rest of his days there, hopefully keeping him comfortable - now this.
