2nd fence down the hill was omitted.
With the top four in the weights having very little experience or success over fences, the overall form of this race might not be that strong. There were five in with a chance at the second-last, but those held up off the early pace dominated the finish.
CAVERS GLEN showed the benefit of a recent run at this course, setting off in mid-division away from the heat of the early pace, moving up on the downhill stretch and staying on well on the slog to the line to register his first win over fences. Though he was raised 7lb for that last run, the soft ground and stiff track suited, and the stable's runners are in good enough form currently that their fitness can offset a rise in the weights.
Malko De Beaumont was held up wide of the pack and moved up to challenge, having every chance, but did not stay on as well as the winner. He won his first start for this stable last month in a fast time, but disappointed after a quick return to the races last time. He bounced back to form here and is suitedby soft ground, though might need an easier track at this trip.
On just his second chasing start, Innominate took a bit of time to get his jumping together, but stayed on in the closing stages and is on a reasonable mark to win his first race.
Doc Row put up a good performance, leading most of the way and gaining ground at the fences, though he did get close in to the ninth but soon regained the lead before weakening up the home straight. Having reportedly had a breathing problem in his last race, also at Carlisle, he showed enough to be worth a try at an easier track.
Cadoudalas hugged the rail and had every chance, but weakened in the closing stages. He weakened on his last start at this track, so maybe a stiff finish is not ideal.
Ballynure is best on a stiff track or soft ground, but, after setting the early pace, he weakened in the back straight.
Extra Smooth was in the process of running a good race on his first start after a two-year break, staying with the pace until making a mistake three out, when just getting outpaced.

This intermediate chase has been the stepping-stone for some high-class northern-trained horses to begin their senior campaigns. Last year's winner L'Antartique had won at the previous Cheltenham Festival and after this race went on to success in the Paddy Power Chase a fortnight later. With two winners from last season's Festival lining up in this year's renewal, the field may have been small but the stage was set for a mouth-watering contest, though it did not turn out to be as competitive as expected.
TIDAL BAY is truly a top-class horse that has finished no worse than second in his 14 starts to date, with nine wins. His novice chase campaign culminated in the annihilation of a competitive field in the Arkle, followed by another Grade 1 successat the Aintree Festival. Though possessing plenty of speed, he showed enough stamina when winning over course and distance a year ago.
This time around the pace was steady. He jumped fluently enough until a mistake at the open ditch on the downhill stretch before the home straight, but that did not stop his progress and he powered up the hill to finish with plenty in reserve. He has an idiosyncratic way of running, wearing a noseband in an attempt to lower his high head carriage, and he looks to be always expending a lot of energy, with ears pinned back before the race had truly developed. So to finish so strongly, albeit off a slow pace, suggests a potent combination of speed and stamina.
Future plans are to be decided, but the King George is being seriously considered. He has only competed against inexperienced horses in his career to date, so maybe connections will opt for a more stringent test before deciding on a target.
Rimsky is a useful performer, though after winning a beginners' chase at Towcester last season he did not go on to make much of an impact over fences. His best performances came in defeat, such as when beaten in the four-mile chase at the Cheltenham Festival. His wins to date have been achieved in relatively slow times. With the benefit of a recent run he stayed on well up the hill, but was completely outclassed by the winner.
O'Maley won three small-field novice chases for Paul Nicholls last season. On his first start for a stable that recently gained its first win of the season, he ran well, the only rival attempting to keep pace with the winner until the effort took its toll and he pecked at the second-last and was tired when blundering at the last.
Albertas Run developed into a top-drawer staying novice chaser last season, achieving a rare double in winning the Reynoldstown at Ascot followed by victory in the Royal & SunAlliance Chase at the Cheltenham Festival (beating Roll Along who won the United House Handicap Chase at Ascot). This trip was likely to be too short, considering Tidal Bay had swept him aside over this trip at Aintree last year. Settling in the rear, he was jumping fluently but starting to get outpaced on the final downhill run when hitting the fifth-last and thereafter was not driven when his chance had gone. The ground was reportedly a bit too tacky for him, but this will provide a useful warm-up for the Hennessy.

A race that changed complexion completely at the second last flight. Well supported favourite and Irish debutant Pesoto set out to make all and opened up a clear lead while jumping well. He was coming back to the field but appeared to still have a little bit up his sleeve and was yet to come under pressure when he took a fall at the second last. Whether he had enough left to hold on is arguable but he looks to be a horse with a fair engine that jumps well. The flight where he fell he seemed to jump perfectly well but to knuckle on the landing side.
The most likely winner at that stage looked to be Dancing Tornado. He had travelled well to track the leader into the straight while stuck in a little bit of a pocket on the inner, but he had racing room and was set to challenge when he was badly hampered by the fall of the favourite and unseated. He appeared to be very unlucky, a quality which has been in short supply for this horse so far this season.
In the end the way was left clear for BAILY VIEW. He was by no means an unlikely winner when the incident at the second last occurred as he was only about a length off the favourite, but it was made infinitely easier and he tried to do his bit for the runner-up by jinking to his right coming to the last. In the end though he was always in control and stayed on well to win convincingly.
Traleemaiden hurdle winner Clan Tara ran well. He raced handily enough, but just didn't quite have the pace to go with the prinicipals turning into thestraight. He stayed on effectively from the second last, but couldn't take advantage of the winner's wanderings and was beaten by a better horse.
Jimmy Ber raced prominently before coming under pressure and looking onepaced from after the third last. He kept on at that pace.
Taravada didn't run too badly on his return from an eleven month absence. He was a bit keen early as he raced in the chasing group and went from travelling to looking onepaced after the fourth last. His jumping in the latter stages was that of a tired enough horse and he should come on a lot for this.
On his first outing for the stable, Singh On Song didn't run badly. He raced in front of mid-division and didn't improve his placing over the last half mile or so.
On his hurdling debut, Whosaidso was never in the race with a chance, but kept on eyecatchingly late on, as did Farmer Grant who passed a good few horses in the latter stages.

Fewer than half of these appeared to have any chance of winning on form, including bumper efforts, so this race is probably took little winning. The early gallop was dreadful and the race only took shape as they started their final circuit.
GRAND THEATRE, whose stable won the first division, ran in a couple of bumpers at the start of the year but had not been out since February. Towards the rear early on his hurdling debut, he moved through to lead after the last and won in good style after stretching right away. He is a nice prospect and the step up in trip posed no problems for him.
Teenage Idol got off the mark in a bumper on his debut but struggled after that in slightly better races. Having his first start over hurdles, he pulled very hard for much of the race and had nothing left when challenged by the winner. He was nicely clear of the third, however.
Comhla Ri Coig had not been out for 553 days but the bumper he ran in had produced plenty of winners, including Carruthers. He hung around the back for a lot of the race and never looked like playing a part in the finish, but shaped like a horse capable of winning a staying event.
Pakineo Des Pictons probably bumped into an above-average sort over about 2m at this course last time but ran like a complete non-stayer this time, as he went from travelling to nothing in a matter of strides.
The remainder were well beaten and did not suggest they are worth following in the short term.

Nothing was keen to jump off in front, and when they did start racing Ring The Boss set just a steady early gallop.
This is usually an informative contest, Comply Or Die and Turko featuring on the list of recent winners, and Paul Nicholls, who was responsible for the latter and also last year's winner Ornais, completed a hat-trick courtesy of a smart performance from BREEDSBREEZE.
Winner of the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle as a novice last season, he scored with plenty in hand on his chase debut at Bangor and was strong at the head of the market on this rise in grade. Happy enough to track Ring The Boss early, he was left in front following a mistake from his main market rival at the 12th, but made one himself at the next and was headed again 4 out.
Asked to pick up off the final bend, both he and the runner-up quickened clear of the remainder and it was his superior jumping/staying power that won the day, leading before 3 out and staying on strongly to win with plenty in hand.
He gives the impression his jumping will be even better off a truer gallop and, as he reportedly does little once in front, it is reasonable to expect further improvement. He was cut across the boards for both the Arkle and SunAlliance Chase, but would not have the basic speed for the former and may now head to Fairyhouse in three week's time for the Grade 1 Drinmore Novices Chase.
Ring The Boss was looking vulnerable when left clear by the fall of Razor Royale on his reappearance at Cheltenham and needed to haveimproved to take this Grade 2 contest. He made a lot of the running and briefly looked to be going the stronger after 4 out, but had just been headed when blundering at the next and was beaten soon after. He was looking tired when again making a mistake 2 out and looks set to continue to fall short against the best over fences.
This was a respectable effort from Hold Em. A smart novice hurdler who made his chase debut only six days earlier, winning at Huntingdon, this represented a sharp rise in grade, and soft ground would have been far from ideal for him. He came under pressure when the pace quickened, but he kept plugging away and was ultimately not beaten that far. The combination of a step up to 3m on a sounder surface should help.
Sir Harry Ormesher showed a very useful level of form when beating Straw Bear on his chase debut at Exeter (for all that the runner-up was not given a hard ride), but he had to prove himself on softer ground over this longer trip, and found himself struggling soon after 4 out. He may have found this rise in grade coming too soon and can be given another chance under more suitable conditions.
Oncle Kid was always going to struggle against this calibre of horse and did well t beat one home.
Commemoration Day was never travelling and ran as though something was amiss.

BETTING FORECAST: Evs Nevada Royale, 5/2 Quickbeam, 6/1 Oscar Bay, 9/1 Spare Cash, 11/1 Chiaro, 12/1 Carnival Town, 50/1 Michigan D´Isop, 66/1 Radetsky March, 100/1 Its A Classic.
SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: NEVADA ROYALE (nap), who made mincemeat of Spare Cash over hurdles last term, will hopefully have benefited from a breathing operation and connections remain very hopeful he will still develop into a smart performer over fences. He can take this on the way to better things, perhaps at the maiden expense of Quickbeam, who was so progressive over hurdles last term.[PJ]
