What do you think has been the most over-hyped and/or most over-rated horse of recent times?

Every year - especially on the flat - at least one animal is hyped up as the best thing ever. But as we all know, rarely do they deliver.

One that immediately springs to mind for me is Celtic Swing. He was the champion 2YO in 1994 and was then supposed to win absolutely everything as a 3YO in 1995. If I recall correctly, he did win the Greenham, but then was beaten in the 2000 Guineas. He didn't make it to Epsom, but (I think) did win the French Derby. He was still clearly a very good horse, but the hype that surrounded him prior to the start of the 1995 season was unbelievable.

Arazi is perhaps another one.

Celtic Swing was one of my most favourite flat horses ever so i am some what defensive of his record. He was injured in the French Derby so never got the chance to demonstrate just how good he was. 2nd in a Guineas for a true stayer and beaten by a very good miler was very very creditable.

However, I take your point about the hype and Celtic Swing was probably one of the first horses that suffered from massive hype prior to their classic year. It seems a relatively recent phenomenon which I think almost every Racing Post Trophy, Fillies Mile & Dewhurst winner now suffers from.

Its happening more and more over the sticks too. How ridiculous did the Binocular hype get prior to Cheltenham. Totally out of proportion to what he achieved on the track. Suddenly everybody developed rose tinted spectacles about the horses he had beaten.

Remember Hawk Wing?

If it seems to good to be true then it probably is.

Hawk wasa good horse, placed in classics. And his Lockinge win was awesome.

Loved Celtic Swing, bar injury what would of been.
