This has made my day, which probably goes to highlight in fact what a dull day i'm in for at work!

As per my original thread, I try to build up a large Anti Post book prior to the season starting, risky, but often the rewards and pure satisfaction (i.e. Zaynar) outweigh any losses.

£10 Fourfold

Sea The Stars @ 10/11 - Sandown
Fed  @ 4/7 - Mens Wimbledon
All Williams Final @ 4/9 - Womens Wimbledon
Master Minded @ Evens - Champion Chases 2010

And Billy Hills have already paid me out, obviously classing the mighty Master Minded as a banker!

:-)

£84.57 up already in the Cheltenham portifolio

As for the actual race. To me, if you take away his last 2 runs, why are we even doubting him? On the decline, rubbish? He did what he had to do at Cheltenham, he still won by 7 lengths, beating Well Chief, who ran a cracker, yet people were still complaining. As for Ireland, yes, not a great run, but it was a long season, yes he only had 3 runs but he would have been on the go since Sept/Oct,.

And please, please, remember one thing about the Champ, something we all forget, he's a 6 year old, he really should be novice chasing this year, and aiming for the Arkle, but he's going for this third Champion Chase.

He will not get beat at Cheltenham ,even Hills know that :-)

As for the opposition. I'll be backing another E/W, as I did last year, and that is Petin Robin, currently 33's, he made me a fortune last year in E/W trebles and fourfolds @ Cheltenham, he himself was only a novice last season, bound to improve, loves gping left handed, as you'll see by his poor jumping at Ascot in the VC Chase. He is an E/W bargin!

Got to agree Brownie, old boy, I think it is barmy that people are knocking Master Minded.  He went through the whole of last season unbeaten for heaven's sake!!!

Have said many times over on here that I believe that his performance in winning the 2008 Champion Chase was quite probably the best NH performance that I have ever seen (and this was certainly borne out by the official ratings).

Mr Nicholls made the very salient point after Cheltenham 2009 that Master Minded had become somewhat lazy and because he was finding winning so easy was only doing enough rather than fully utilising what he had left 'in the tank'.  He also said that he hopes a credible challenger emerges so that he can be tested and therefore show his full potential.

As long as he stays sound I can't see anything touching Master Minded for several seasons over 2 miles.

that's fantastic that they've paid out already brownie? Well done you.

As we now have a thread about Master Minded/Champion Chase I'll summarise my thoughts from the other thread.
1. Too early to say MM is in decline
2. Big Zeb won't get round
3. Kalahari King & Tartak are the two novices to look out for, concern being Tartak's error prone jockey  xcry
4. Unless Mikael D'Haguenet turns up.......

I have to agree that the decline comments are ridiculous unless he has developed a physical problem we are all unaware of.

I'm certain that like most of the best chasers he is best fresh and that explained his loss at Aintree in 2008. He's built for further and in this years Champion they didn't go as quick (i thought it quite a sub standard renewal actually) so didn't bring his stamina in to play, which is why the winning margin was smaller.

I think this probably explains the Punchestown loss too. It's a tight r/h track which wouldn't suit an out and out galloper. If they run him on such tracks again it should be over further.

I've heard this before from many a person, however I don't think it's a question of can he, it's why would they want to take that route.

They already dominate the division, with Kauto Star & Denman, plus they have Big Bucks to come for 2010, 2011 etc.

Question is why would you reroute a star from the 2 mile division, where he should shine, to gamble at 3m 2f?

For me he'll never run in a Gold Cup, a King George, Yes, without doubt, he tried it with the Azertyioup, and he will probably find 2 mile a bit sharp in later years, similar to VPU. So he'll probably get 3 miles, but that extra 2/3f is a long way, espically at Cheltenham. He has so much speed, he jumps so quick, we can't really say he'll stay the GC trip.

For me he could win 5 Champion Chases, possibly a King George, but his legacey will be at 2 miles.

Has he been on the sauce, old boy!?!

When Master Minded came over from France Mr Nicholls was strongly advised that he didn’t stay beyond a distance of 18 furlongs.  Being of a strong independent mind though Mr Nicholls tested the theory himself and ran him in the 20 furlong Grade 1 at the Aintree Festival in 2008.  And the result was that he didn’t get home, tiring badly in the last furlong and a half.

I am fairly certain that he won’t be tried beyond 18 furlongs ever again.  Therefore, I would be amazed if he even ran in a King George let alone a Cheltenham Gold Cup!

I agree Brownie and think, providing he stays sound, that a record number of Champion Chases will be his.

As I said before I think his loss at Aintree was purely down to not being fresh. When you see Masterminded he looks like a 3m horse, very big and strong.

I think he will stay and that they will eventually try it again. After all he has been very precocious so far, similar to Kauto, and as he matures I think his speed will be blunted and therefore the step up in trip will be sensible. (Kauto has turned out to be a rest pattern horse too!)

It might be a couple of years yet but I still see him as a King George horse in the making.
