After a short diversion to Minsterworth to watch the Severn Bore (look it up!)
Mrs DG and I had a pleasant drive up through Herefordshire, particularly gorgeous at this time of year what with all the orchards bearing an abundance of fruit and with the trees beginning to show their Autumn colours despite the bright sunlight and into Shropshire to Ludlow to attend an Open Day at Downton Hall Stables where Henry Daly plies his trade. What a stunning location to train racehorses, approached down a long drive through a private estate with views across to the Mendip Hills and immaculately manicured grounds.
A quick run up to check out the gallops
And down to the parade ring
After an amusing introduction by Alistair Down, Henry Daly mapped out the programme for each horse as it stands at present and the horses were paraded two at a time however with three yards to pull from it was not logistically possible to parade all the horses there.
This one is called The Falklander and is a record for the stable in that when it first arrived at the yard it was the heaviest ever newcomer there. By 42 kilogram !
One of the stars of the stable last year Briery Fox
Martha’s Kinsman who this season will be qualified to go Hunter Chasing and given he will be running at level weights against horses supposedly inferior to him will have a weight advantage he should take advantage of
The image of Blackpool Tower on the rug is the giveaway, a horse belonging to Trevor Hemmings called Hopkins who had a successful season two years ago but who disappointed last year. Now showing signs of being in tune with himself again.
Arctic Ben who landed a large touch for the lads in the yard a while back
Alderburn who although winning plenty of prize money has rather disappointed the trainer, however his handicap rating now should see him win a valuable handicap or two this season
Listen very closely I shall say zis only vonce. My name is Possol and I did really well last season chasing. I am being run in Novice Hurdles until January to protect my handicap mark. I will then be entered in the Racing Post chase as a prep race for the Grand National. My trainer is confident I will handle Aintree and the big fences and will not be in the least surprised if I win.
Star of the yard Mighty Man, who after stem cell treatment ran fantastically well in two races after it had seemed he was finished. Will not be seen on anything other than good ground on flat tracks and all roads lead to Aintree, forget Cheltenham.
