Carte Diamond looks set for retirement after a disappointing 6th on his return to hurdles.

Trainer Brian Ellison "I shall have to talk to the owner, but retirement could be an option.

"The horse is fine, but he disappointed me today as he had been schooling so well and I thought he would run a lot better.

"The jockey (Jack Doyle) thought he might want further and it is possible they have gone too quick for him, so we could consider a stiffer 2m somewhere, but I would hate anything to happen to him and that could be it."

The horse almost died in 2005 when being prepared for the Melbourne Cup. He crashed through the aluminium  running rail and was impaled on a 60cm metal spike.
